First game of the season and the team were raring to go. With Euan and Joe missing, a slightly weakened Red Team lined up against a strong High Lane team looking to get off to a good start to the season. The team got off to a decent start, with some lovely wing play from Alfie and Laeem and some typical hard tackling in midfield from Tom. Unfortunately, despite the opposition goal being under a great deal of pressure for most of the half, the High Lane defence could not be breached. Indeed, a counter attack from High Lane resulted in them opening the scoring. This seemed to spur High Lane on and they ended up grabbing a deserved second before half time. So High Lane lead 2-0 at the break. 2nd half and Sam, who had battled hard for 15 minutes without reward, makes way for Xavier, who promptly opens the scoring with a delightful header from a Stockley corner. 2-1, game on we all thought! For the next 10 minutes, it was all one way traffic with the High Lane defence under increasing pressure, repelling wave after wave of attacks. As the end of the game neared, heads started to drop as we could find no way through the strong High Lane defence despite all our efforts. A defensive lapse led to High Lane’s third, closely followed by their fourth. In the dying minutes High Lane managed to grab another couple as they went for the kill. Final score 6-1, although even their coach agreed at the end that 6-1 was not a true reflection of a game that for long periods was incredibly close.
